The following is a brief timeline of events creating the Internet as we know it.
I was fortunate to have been involved in some of it's build.
1958
President Eisenhower requests funds to create ARPA.
1939
Hewlett-Packard is Founded
1961
Len Kleinrock writes first paper on packet switching.
1962
JCR Licklider and W. Clark do paper on Internet Concept
1964
Paul Baran writes a paper on distributed communications networks.
1965
First Network experiment at MIT. Two computers talk using packet switching technology
1966
ARPA project begins
1968
ARPANET contract given to Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN). Was BBN Planet.
1969
First ARPANet node installed at UCLA on a Sigma 7 computer.
Second node installed at Stanford to a SDS 940.
Third node installed at the University of California, Santa Barbara. IBM 360/75
Fourth node connected at Utah and a Fifth at BBN in Mass.
1970
Alohanet operational at the University of Hawaii, it is the first packet radio network system.
1972
First email programs written at BBN for ARPANET. The @ sign chosen for its "at" meaning.
1973
First ARPANET international connection to England and Norway.
1974
Intel releases the 8080 CPU. Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn publish a paper that is the design for TCP
1976
Apple computer Founded
Mark gets first computer. A Radio Shack wired discrete hobby system. 8 bit.
1978
TCP split into TCP and IP
1979
3Com founded.
1981
IBM announces Personal computer. Microsoft creates DOS
Mark joins the US Army and is assigned to Intelligence as Signal Security.
1982
Mark finished AIT and is assigned to the 312th Military Intelligence Batallaion 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood
Purchases a Commodore VIC-20 and later a C-64.
1983
Cisco Systems Founded
DNS designed by Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris and Craig Partridge. .edu, .gov, .com, .mil, .org, .net and .int created.
Mark deployed to the 501st Mi Bn 1st Armored Division in Germany
Mark programs a Commodore 64 to allow soldiers to test for their yearly performance Tests.
1985
Symbolic.com becomes the first registered domain.
1986
5000 hosts on ARPAnet/Internet
Mark graduated with EE Degree
1987
The First Cisco router was shipped.
Mark starts teaching Analog Electronics at NEC
Mark starts working at Norton AFB as Computer Tech supporting Zenith Z-100 and Z-248 systems.
Mark buys first IBM PC computer
1989
Quantum became America Online
Mark gets honorable discharge from US Army.
1990
Tim Berners-Lee creates the World Wide Web.
1992
Surfing the Internet is coined by Jean Armour Polly
1993
Mosaic Web Browser come into being. Champaign-Urbana, which is also the birthplace of
the HAL computer from 2001.
Mark starts work at UC Riverside in Unix Lab.
Supporting NeXT computers and then moving into Networking.
At this point, Mark was helping with configuration of Cisco IGS / AGS routers at UC Riverside.
1993
I registered markwilson.com. This site has been active since.
1994
Netscape Born. Microsoft buys Spyglass to create Web Browser for Windows 95.
1995
Sun Releases java. (I remember being at a presentation at UCR with Sun touting how this was going to change the world)
1998
ICANN created by Jon Postel. Postel passes away that year.
1999
Internet-2 Starts by a connection to the Abilene Network. Starting the second generation of Internet for research.
Mark was involved directly with Internet-2 and CENIC. Representing UCR in the build throughout the State of California.
AOL buys Netscape. Napster created starting the war over music.
2000
Fixed wireless highspeed is now seen as a viable alternative to copper and fiber.
The dot-com bubble bursts.
AOL merges with Time Warner
20,000,000 websites on the Internet.
2001
Napster offline until it complies with a Judgement.
First HDTV transmission across a wide area IP network takes place on Internet-2
There was "no" space odyssey
Mark takes job at UC SantaCruz.
911 happens
2002
Mark takes job at EMWD as Network Administrator
2005
You Tube Launches
2006
92 million websites.
2007
Vista launched
1.114 billion people use the Internet
Google surpasses Microsoft as the most valuable global brand and is also the most visited web site.
2010
Economy gone to hell and we still don't have flying cars.
